BRUSHING & FLOSSING

When you have braces, it’s very important to brush and floss after every meal in order to keep your teeth and gums healthy throughout your orthodontic treatment. If you need help choosing the right toothbrush, toothpaste, and dental floss, please ask us and we can help you choose the right products for your teeth and your appliance.

BRUSHING WITH BRACES

Brush your teeth for two minutes after every meal with a soft-bristled, small-headed toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. As an alternative, you can use a powered toothbrush to increase your brushing effectiveness. Brush the outside and inside surfaces of your teeth using small, gentle, circular motions while positioning the head of the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gum line. Brush your teeth’s chewing surfaces and the inside surface of your front teeth using short, gentle, back-and-forth motions. Pay close attention to the areas around your brackets or other appliances.

FLOSSING WITH BRACES

Flossing after every meal will help keep your teeth and braces clean, which will also help keep your treatment time on track. To floss with braces, use a floss threader or special orthodontic floss to thread the floss behind each wire. Wrap the ends of the floss around your pointer fingers of both hands, leaving a few inches of taut floss between them. Gently slide the floss between each set of teeth using a back and forth motion. Floss the sides of each tooth beneath the gum line to remove plaque and food particles. Repeat this process until you’ve flossed all of your teeth. If you find that your floss is not removing all of the food particles between your teeth and around your braces, ask us about a water flosser!

Our Comprehensive Services

  1. Dental Cleanings: Routine dental cleanings are essential to preventive oral care for children. Professional cleanings performed by Dr. Elena Bedilo every six months help maintain the cleanliness of your child’s teeth, removing plaque and tartar buildup that may lead to cavities and gum disease.
  2. Dental Exams: Regular dental exams for children are fundamental to maintaining optimal oral health. These check-ups go beyond routine inspections, offering a comprehensive assessment of your child’s teeth and gums. Conducted by our qualified dentist, Dr. Elena Bedilo, these exams play a vital role in the early detection and prevention of dental issues, ensuring a healthy and vibrant smile for your child.
  3. Fluoride Treatment: Fluoride treatment is a preventive measure aimed at strengthening children’s developing teeth and protecting them from decay. Fluoride is a mineral known for fortifying tooth enamel, making it more resistant to acid attacks from bacteria and sugars. This treatment is especially crucial during the formative years to ensure the longevity and health of your child’s teeth.
  4. Dental Sealants: Dental sealants are a proactive and effective preventive measure explicitly designed for children to protect their molars and premolars. These surfaces often have deep pits and grooves where food particles and bacteria can quickly accumulate, making them vulnerable to cavities. Dental sealants act as a protective barrier, sealing off these areas to prevent the onset of decay and contribute to the overall oral health of your child.

Encouraging Proper Oral Health Care

Ensuring the best at-home oral care practices is essential for a child’s development. Instilling the habit of brushing and flossing every day and following a healthier diet will teach them how to care for their smile, ensure a positive upbringing with the dentist, and encourage a healthy smile for years.

Some of the best ways you can encourage oral health care at home include:

  1. Lead Through Example: Children often learn by observing. Demonstrate good oral hygiene practices by maintaining a consistent routine of brushing and flossing. Make it a family affair to emphasize the importance of these habits.
  2. Make it Fun: Make brushing enjoyable using colorful, child-friendly toothbrushes and toothpaste. Let your child choose oral care supplies featuring their favorite characters or flavors.
  3. Establish a Routine: Create a structured oral hygiene routine that includes brushing and flossing consistently, such as after breakfast and before bedtime. Consistency helps reinforce the importance of these habits.
  4. Set a Timer: Use a timer to ensure that your child brushes for the recommended two minutes. You can make it a game by turning it into a countdown or playing a favorite song during brushing time.

Reward System: Implement a reward system to acknowledge your child’s commitment to oral hygiene. Create a sticker chart and let them place one for each successful brushing and flossing session. Once they reach a particular milestone, celebrate with a small, non-sugary treat or a special outing.
